KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) -- A bus crashed and burst into flames after hitting a hole on an ill-maintained Sudanese highway known as ``the road of death,'' killing 30 people, a government official said Thursday.

The victims were buried at the site of the crash, 300 miles southeast of the capital Khartoum, said Sinnar state Deputy Governor Um-Balli Abdallah Al-Ajaab.

It was not clear how many passengers were on the bus or how many were injured.

The official said the bus lost its front wheels after hitting a hole in the pavement and skidded on its frame before its fuel tank caught fire Wednesday.

The poorly maintained highway from Khartoum runs along the Blue Nile to the Sudan-Ethiopian border.
