LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) -- Two passenger trains collided in eastern Pakistan on Tuesday, killing at least one person and injuring 11 others, railway officials said.
The accident occurred as a train from Nariwal was pulling into a station in Lahore, 30 miles to the southwest, and hit a stationary train already on the track.
One person, a firefighter, was killed. Another railway worker on the train was seriously hurt, officials said.
Police spokesman Ghulam Haider said investigators believe human error may have caused the crash. The engine of one of the trains was badly damaged.
In Pakistan, the railway system is antiquated. Signals are often not working and accidents are relatively common. In the last two years, hundreds of people have died in railway mishaps.
Nasrullah Ghilzai, a spokesman for the state-run railways, said the damaged trains had been removed from the main line, which was being repaired. There were no substantial delays caused by the accident.
Five people were in serious condition at Lahore hospitals, and six others had minor injuries.
``We heard a bang and there was a hue and cry. We reached the spot and began rescue work,'' said Aslam Naeem, who lives near the station.
