An FDNY firefighter is in critical condition after sustaining severe burns at the scene of a two-alarm fire in Queens Thursday afternoon.

Lt. Stephen Halliday, 42, is a member of Ladder 165 in Queens. He has been with the fire department for 15 years. Halliday sustained burns to his face, hands and arms while inside a private dwelling in Queens, fire department officials said.

Officials said the cause of the fire and the circumstances of Halliday's injury are under investigation.

According to the Associated Press, the firefighter had called out a mayday as he fought the blaze in the two-story brick building. The fire in the building's basement and first floor was brought under control at 3:45 p.m.

Halliday is recovering at the burn unit of Nassau University Medical Center. A hospital spokeswoman said Halliday was in critical condition, while FDNY said he is in serious but stable condition.
