Art McFarland reports from Piscataway with the story.
It happened in a housing complex for students. A very frightening accident -- the car took out an exterior wall and shattered one family's living space.
It had to be a horror for the family living in this ground floor apartment when a Nissan Maxima came crashing through the wall.
A campus maintenance worker heard the crash and came to the family's aid.
Rutgers Campus Worker: "We started looking for ... there was a baby in there. We started looking and looking, one of the first rescue squad guys came, he went in there and ... he took the baby out. But everybody was screaming and crying, you know."
The seven-year-old girl, apparently the daughter of graduate students, was seriously injured.
Rutgers Campus Worker: "She looked like she was about seven years old. She had blood all over here, a gash in her head, she couldn't move much."
The car, occupied only by a young male driver, was travelling along Davidson Road when it somehow lost control and hit the building. The driver was also injured.
Emergency crews have now turned their attention to the structural integrity of the housing complex.
Emergency Services Worker: "We believe that we'll be able to re-occupy the building with the exception of the specific apartment that was affected. No significant structural damage that we can tell at this point, the building seems to be intact with regard to the structural integrity."
The baby that the campus worker referred to is OK. We talked to the hospital, Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center, about the condition of the little girl and the driver but they refused to give out any information.
However we do know the little girl was seriously hurt, and the cause of the accident is under investigation.
