A Westchester man was charged with attempted murder yesterday for allegedly throwing his infant daughter out of a seventh-floor window in her mother's Peekskill apartment, police said. Ten-month-old Meana Williams miraculously escaped death when branches outside the apartment broke her 80-foot fall.

She suffered only cuts and bruises.

Her dad, Willie Williams, was charged with attempted murder, assault and unlawful imprisonment.

Peekskill police said the incident was the chilling climax of a violent dispute between Williams and the infant's mother.

They said it started late Saturday night when Williams barged into his former girlfriend's apartment at 807 Main St. in the Bohlmann Towers public housing complex, hoping to revive their relationship.

The two were estranged and the baby's mother had an order of protection against him, family members told Westchester's News 12.

When she turned him down, Williams kidnapped her, police said. He forced her to get into his car and go for a ride, said Detective Sgt. Mark O'Buck.

He later brought her back to her apartment, where they continued to argue. During the angry exchange, Williams grabbed their tiny daughter and dangled her out the window, O'Buck said.

The frantic mother called 911 - and while she was on the phone, Williams dropped the little girl out the window, the detective said.

"Oh, my God! He killed my baby," police quoted the mother as telling the 911 operator.

Minutes later, she was thanking God that Meana had survived.

Williams drove his injured daughter to Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow, where she was evaluated and then transferred to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, where she is still hospitalized. Hospital officials refused to release information about her condition because she is a minor.

Meanwhile, in New Jersey yesterday, another father was charged with endangering the welfare of his baby daughter, who fell to her death from a window in the family's 16th-floor Hackensack apartment last Thursday.

According to police, 1-year-old Anusmita Bagchi pushed out a bedroom window screen and plunged to her death after her father, Shantanu, sat her down on the sill and turned away briefly to take off his watch.

Shantanu was released on $25,000 bail following his arraignment in Bergen County Court. The family had moved to the United States from India a week before the tragedy.
