Firefighters said the 4:55 p.m. blast happened after a man attempted suicide by turning on his gas jets and something set off the fumes. The 10th, 11th and 12th floors of the building at 21 Stuyvesant Oval were badly damaged and tenants on those floors were evacuated.

The man who tried to kill himself was hospitalized, and two others suffered minor injuries.
