BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Two elderly people and a cat were safely evacuated after a fire broke out in a three-story house Monday morning on Park Avenue.
Firefighters responded to the blaze, which broke out in the basement, at about 6 a.m. at 1121 Park Ave., and confined the fire to the first floor of the wood-framed building.
Assistant Chief Manuel Firpi said firefighters were called to the scene on a report from a neighbor of smoke in the area. When they arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the back in the house and fire in the basement.
The elderly couple managed to get out safely with the help of firefighters, who also resuscitated Fluffy, the house cat. A search of the house was conducted to make sure no one else was in the house.
According to city records, the home is owned by Wesley and Mildred Mayo, who have owned the brown, single-family home since 1964. The house is kind of a landmark in the city because there's a huge tree in the front yard that's leaning over at about a 30-degree angle. It's been that way for as long as anyone can remember. The house was built in 1910.
The cause of the blaze wasn't immediately clear.
Ladder 5 and Engine 4 responded.
