That was the rescue facing Fargo firefighters Tuesday when they got a call about a dog trapped in the Red River. The pooch - a black Labrador named Jack - had escaped his owner's yard despite its electronic fencing and was spotted in the water near El Zagal Par 3 Golf Course, Assistant Fire Chief Larry Schuh said.
When firefighters first arrived, they couldn't see the dog - but they could hear him, Schuh said.
"He was howling," said Schuh, who followed the sound until he spotted the dog about 120 yards away.
Jack had apparently struggled to get his front paws and chest onto an ice shelf, but his bottom half was still submerged, Schuh said. Firefighters donned water-rescue gear, grabbed Jack by the collar and pulled him ashore. He was "shivering pretty good" and had frost on his whiskers near his muzzle, Schuh said. Otherwise, Jack was unharmed.
