TORRINGTON, Conn. -- One person was killed and another was injured in a fire that broke out inside a third-floor apartment on Pythian Avenue Tuesday night.

One of the victims, a man who lived on the third floor, was found unresponsive and was pronounced dead Tuesday night, firefighters said.

Several 911 callers reported a fire at 59 Pythian Ave. at about 8 p.m., police said. One of the callers indicated someone was inside an apartment on the third floor.

Firefighters, after responding to the home, tried to reach the third floor to rescue the resident, but could not because the fire was so intense. Residents on the first and second floors of the building were evacuated.

Both victims were taken to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital for treatment. The name of the man who died in the fire was not immediately released. One firefighter was injured, but was treated and released at a local hospital.

Firefighters said the building sustained heavy smoke and water damage in the fire and was deemed uninhabitable. Two people were displaced, according to American Red Cross spokesman Paul Shipman.

The fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
