FDNY, NYPD Hit Hard By Mayor's Budget Cuts

Nov. 15, 2002
Eight engine companies would close under plan, with cuts at nearly 50 other firehouses.

If approved, Mayor Michael Bloomberg's budget plan will hit the city's fire and police departments hard.

The mayor's proposal, unveiled Friday, would close eight firehouses and force nearly 50 engine companies to trim their staffs.

The engine companies slated to close include:

In Brooklyn: Engine Companies 204 in Cobble Hill, 212 in Greenpoint, 278 in Sunset Park, and 209 in Williamsburg/Bedford-Stuyvesant. Squad 252 will be relocated from Bushwick to Midtown Manhattan.

In Queens: Engine Companies 261 in Long Island City and 293 in Woodhaven.

In Manhattan: Engine Company 36 in East Harlem.

Residents who live by those firehouses said they're very concerned.
