New York City firefighters plan to gather in Lower Manhattan Monday to protest a book that claims firefighters looted stores while the World Trade Center sill burned.

The Uniformed Fire Officers Association has planned a rally at the South Street Seaport, where William Langewiesche will be signing copies of his new book. "American Ground: Unbuilding the World Trade Center."

The author is a correspondent for Atlantic Monthly, which first published the book as a three-part series. In the book, Langewiesche, who had full access to the rescue and recovery effort at the World Trade Center site, says some firefighters stole jeans from a Gap store in the World Trade Center concourse while people evacuated the twin towers on September 11, 2001.

The fire officers' union says the claim is false. Atlantic Monthly
