Historic Connecticut Church Destroyed by Fire

Jan. 02--SOMERS -- Firefighters from throughout the region were battling at the Somers Congregational United Church of Christ Monday morning.
The fire at the church, near the intersections of routes 190 and 83 in Somers, was reported at about 11:40 p.m. Sunday.
The main sanctuary and the church's steeple were engulfed in flames.
A ladder-tower truck was setup in the middle of Route 190 to pour water onto the blaze. Firefighters from Ellington, Stafford, and Enfield were called to help battle the fire.
At 12:49 fire commanders ordered all firefighters out of the building.
Electrical power to a substantial portion of Somers was also knocked out, but later restored.
The sanctuary that burned was built in 1842. The church community dates to 1727.
