A man who sued a Frenchtown firefighter who saved his life after he slammed into a fire apparatus in 2009 won't see a dime from a recent settlement, according to WXYZ-TV.
Nick Otter was driving his truck on a rain-slicked road on June 19, 2009 when he rounded a curve before hitting the back of the rig that was at the scene of a wreck in the opposite lane.
Monroe County Deputy Robert Blair determined that Otter's truck was "traveling at a speed too fast for the curve" and that it "crossed the center line" in his report.
A police dash cam also captured the crash.
Otter's attorney, however, blamed the township and the firefighter manning the truck, claiming that the fire truck was actually over the center line in his lane of travel.
He was seriously injured in the crash and had to be cut from the pickup truck before being flown to a hospital.
While Otter initially wanted $300,000 to settle the case, the township’s insurance company paid only $47,000 to not incur the costs of going to trial.
His children got $20,000 in a trust account and the rest of the money went to pay lawyer's fees and court costs.
