A firefighter who was injured fighting an arson on New Year's Eve was released from the hospital Thursday.
James P. O'Neal is expected to return to the Tulsa Fire Department after he fully recuperates.
O'Neal, who has been a Tulsa firefighter for nearly 14 years, is part of the Engine 19 crew, which was the first group of firefighters to respond to the fire at 4926 N. Elwood Ave., said Fire Department Spokesman Stan May.
The crew had made its way to one of the back rooms of the house when O'Neal became unconscious.
His mask was full of smoke when firefighters got to him. He was transported to the OSU Medical Center, where he spent several days in the intensive care unit.
The investigation of the fire is ongoing, Administrative Chief Jeremy Moore said.
District Chief Stacey Belk said O'Neal and his family were elated that he could leave the hospital earlier than expected.
"He's real excited about going home," Belk said.
The International Association of Fire Fighters Local 176 in Tulsa has established a fund at the Fire Fighter's Credit Union, 9200 E. 41st St., for O'Neal and his family.
The reward for information about whoever started the fire has increased to $4,600, including a donation from a New York City firefighter.
Anyone with information about the arson, which occurred about 7:30 p.m. Dec. 31, is asked to call the Arson Hot Line at 918-596-ARSN.
