Two 9-year-old twins were hospitalized tonight after inhaling smoke andone jumped out of a burning house in the West Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side.
One was a boy and the other a girl, a fire official said.
Five ambulances were sent to the 2-story house in the 4600 block of West Erie Street when the blaze broke out at 8:22 p.m., Fire Media Affairs spokesman Joe Roccasalva said.
Firefighters found that one of the 9-year-olds had jumped out of a window and both suffered smoke inhalation. The children were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition but "they are going to be OK,'' Roccasalva said.
Their grandparents, who were the only other occupants, were not hurt, he said.
Harrison District police Lt. John Doherty said the children were "awake and breathing'' when they were taken to Mount Sinai. Further information about the victims was not available.
An EMS Plan 1, which automatically sent five ambulances to the scene, was secured at 9: 21 p.m.
Roccasalva said he did not know what caused the blaze, but said it was out as of 9:45 p.m.
