Jan. 09--Two young children are in protective custody after firefighters discovered their mother was so incapacitated she did not notice a fire on the stove early this morning, police said.

The 33-year-old woman appeared to be under the influence of either alcohol or drugs or some combination of the two, police said.

Firefighters found a small kitchen fire when they arrived at the house in the 2300 block of North Somerset, near 21st and Amidon, shortly before 1:30 a.m., Fire Captain Stuart Bevis said. The fire was quickly extinguished.

The two boys, one an infant and the other 3 years old, were taken into protective custody. Authorities were waiting for the mother's condition to improve before questioning her.
