ALIQUIPPA, Pa. -- An Aliquippa firefighter is in stable condition following surgery for an injury suffered while battling a blaze Sunday morning at a Franklin Avenue business, according to fire Chief Dave Foringer.

Capt. J.T. Pennington required elbow surgery after the ladder on an aerial truck collapsed beneath him. Foringer said Pennington is expected to be released from Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh later this week.

The truck has been taken out of service and will be inspected by representatives of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), according to Foringer. The department website said the truck, which has a 100-foot ladder and was manufactured by American LaFrance, has been in use since 1976.

The fire at Junak's Auto Repair, 337 Franklin Ave., started in a chimney that was serving a wood stove, according to the chief. The building, constructed in 1915 and purchased by the Junaks in 1980, according to county property records, was heavily damaged by fire and water.
