Clearwater Assistant Chief Marvin Pettingill said he did not see Matney until right before the impact and was unable to avoid him.

A pedestrian died Monday night after being struck by a Clearwater Fire & Rescue SUV responding to a call.

Johnny Matney, 41, walked into the path of Assistant Chief Marvin Pettingill's vehicle at approximately 6:14 p.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to WTSP-TV.

The Chevy Suburban had its lights and siren activated and was en route to a call for a kitchen fire at 1661 Greanlea Drive.

Pettingill said he did not see Matney until right before the impact and was unable to avoid him.

He was uninjured in the crash.

Witnesses told police the man did not use a crosswalk and that it was dusk at the time of the crash.

Public Safety Spokeswoman Elizabeth Watts said alcohol is believed to be a factor in regards to Matney.
