Snowfall and strong winds were blamed for hundreds of accidents that occurred in Missouri on Thursday.

The St. Louis area and the northeast region of the state were the most affected by the weather, the The Associated Press reported.

One person died in a single-vehicle wreck on I-55 in Jefferson County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The snow started falling around 4 a.m. and created a slick sheen of ice that was made worse by 30-mile winds.

Patrol Cpl. Jeff Wilson said the patrol's St. Louis-area office had received some 250 calls about accidents and slide-offs by late morning.
