An off-duty member of the Mims Volunteer Fire Department rescued a sleeping man from a burning home Thursday -- and then had to rescue him again.
Firefighter Marillian Teague was driving with her mother when they observed smoke coming from a mobile home in the 3400 block of Benson Court shortly before 5 p.m., according to a news release from Brevard County Fire Rescue.
They called 911 and Teague ran up to the home to check for people inside.
A dog tied to a post near the front door was barking and trying to enter the house as she approached.
"The front door of the home was open and I could see a male lying asleep on the couch," she said. "I was able to wake him up and get him to leave the home as the smoke was starting to get thick."
With the man out of the home, she worked to move the dog to safety, but the resident reportedly tried to re-enter the mobile home.
Teague pulled him out again by just as flames began to come through the doorway.
Paramedics later evaluated and released both the man and Teague for minor smoke inhalation.
When crews arrived on the scene the mobile home was fully involved and was a total loss.
It took firefighters five minutes to get the blaze under control.
Teague said it appeared that the fire started in the kitchen and quickly spread though the exact cause is currently under investigation.
