Jan. 14--A Fayetteville police officer suffered a minor head injury while assisting firefighters who were fired upon by a Fort Bragg soldier Friday night.
Firefighters initially were called to a fire at 1137 Cape Harbor Court about 10 p.m. when they requested police backup, Fayetteville police spokesman Gavin MacRoberts said. Someone began shooting at them as soon as they arrived.
Initial reports indicated the officer had been shot in the face, but at press time it wasn't clear how exactly the officer was injured.
Police cordoned off the area near Austin Creek apartment complex and sent in SWAT officers and an armored vehicle in an effort to capture the shooter, who they identified as a Fort Bragg soldier.
Police were trying to contact the soldier's commanding officer, as he barricaded himself inside his apartment, and called in personnel to try to negotiate with him.
Police also blocked traffic at Seventy First School and Old Bunce roads and at Foxberry and Seventy First School roads.
Firefighters, police and EMS units remained at the scene after 11:45 p.m Friday.
