Jan. 14--A West Toledo apartment building that caught fire Friday had to be razed.

The building, in the 3100 block of Meadowbrook Court, caught fire about 3:45 a.m., Toledo fire Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld said.

Four children ranging in age from 3 to 9 in the apartment next to the burning unit were rescued without injury from the second floor of the 12-unit three-story building, Lieutenant Hertzfeld said. The American Red Cross was at the scene to help the displaced, spokesman Jason Copsey said.

Toledo firefighters also extinguished a fire that engulfed a two-story home and attached garage at 2333 Tremainsville Rd. near Mellwood Avenue late Friday afternoon, fire officials said.

No injuries were reported, but one firefighter searching the smoke-filled basement briefly became disoriented. He was able to find another crew member and exit the structure safely, Lieutenant Hertzfeld said.

No one was home at the time. The fire apparently began in the garage and spread to the house. Damage was estimated at $50,000, he said. The Lucas County Auditor's Office shows that house, built in 1916, is owned by Albert and Gloria Hess.
