GARDNER -- An early morning fire ravaged an apartment building in Gardner on Sunday, killing a woman, sending one firefighter to the hospital and displacing 12 other residents.
Gardner Fire Chief Ron Therrien said a four-alarm fire a 34 Franklin Court broke out at about 2:30 a.m. in frigid conditions in a triple-decker complex that housed six apartments.
"A middle-aged woman who was a tenant of a first-floor apartment lost her life in the fire," Therrien said.
The fire is believed to have started in the woman's apartment, but the cause is still under investigation.
The firefighter was transported to Heywood Hospital after having trouble breathing, Therrien said. He said the firefighter was in stable condition.
Troopers assigned to the State Fire Marshal's Office, troopers assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney's Office and Gardner fire and police are investigating the blaze, according to a release from State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan.
