Jan. 16--Hawaii County firefighters had to bring in heavy equipment to extinguish a small, but stubborn fire in a green waste and fill pile near the Keahou landfill Sunday afternoon.
The fire only burned about 1,000 square feet of county land below the landfill. But because the fire was deep in the green waste pile, a county excavator and loader were called in to help firefighters go through the pile of green waste and extinguish the fire.
The fire was reported at 2:46 p.m., but it wasn't until 4:54 p.m. that the fire was declared under control.Twenty-five firefighters worked until 6:22 p.m. to finally extinguish the fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
