Jan. 16--SEATTLE -- A candle is believed to have started a Queen Anne apartment fire that forced more than 30 residents in the building to evacuate in freezing temperatures early Monday morning.
Crews responded to the building on West Galer Street about 4 a.m. and found a man hanging outside a window in an apparent attempt to escape the smoke, a Seattle Fire Department spokesperson said.
The man was safely rescued and the fire was brought under control after about 30 minutes.
Residents were forced to evacuate the building during the fire and ensuing investigation. They were kept warm in a Metro bus while officials worked to determine the cause of the fire.
The damage from the fire was contained to the unit where it originated, displacing one resident.
The cost of the damage is estimated at $100,000.
