A refurbished fire department tanker caught fire Monday as it was on the way to a garage for repairs.
The assistant chief of Union Fire Dept. in Maine, who was driving the rig when the engine exploded, was not hurt, according to KnoxVillageSoup.
Union Fire Chief Barry Norris told reporters oil shot out of the engine and ignited, adding that the assistant chief was lucky to escape the burning vehicle without being injured.
Firefighters from the the department along with Appleton responded to extinguish the blaze.
Norris said he did not know the cause of the explosion. He said the vehicle is a used Irving fuel tractor trailer dating back to the 1980s that was purchased by the Union Fire Department. It was completely refurbished in 1997, according to the newspaper.
