Jan. 17--Maui firefighters rescued a 17-year-old boy from a bamboo forest trail off the Hana Highway Monday afternoon.

The boy was with a group of six teenagers, but decided to return to his vehicle on the highway about 3 miles into the trail, a fire department spokesman said.

When the boy's friends returned to the highway at about 6 p.m., they found the boy's car, but he was not with the vehicle.

Maui firefighters and a paramedic went to the area where the teenager was last seen and found him at about 8:24 p.m. when he responded to firefighters calling out his name. He refused medical attention and his parents met up with him at the highway just after 8:50 p.m., a fire department spokesman said.
