Jan. 19--TROY -- Firefighters escaped injury when a ceiling collapsed on them while fighting a fire at 853 Third Ave. on Thursday afternoon, Troy Fire Chief Tom Garrett said.

No one was in the home when authorities arrived, Garrett said.

Mike Mullahey lives in the first-floor apartment with his three children. He said his fiance called to tell him about the fire. His children were at school at the time.

The family owned three cats and at least one, Momo, was rescued.

A flashover occurred while four to five firefighters were in the building, causing the ceiling collapse.

The fire started in a laundry room, Garrett said.

Troy and Cohoes firefighters responded to the scene.

"It's tough, it's cold," Garrett said of the weather conditions Thursday.
