A four-alarm house fire in Cumberland Friday morning has claimed the life of a 6-year-old girl, and her 10-year-old sister remains missing, fire officials said.
The 6:05 a.m. fire in the 300 block of E. Harrison St. has affected at least five row houses on the block. About 100 firefighters from Allegany County and Mineral County, W. Va., remained on the scene throughout the morning and continued searching for the missing child. The origin and cause of the blaze remain under investigation.
The younger girl was in cardiac arrest after she was rescued from a second-story window, investigators said. She received CPR at the scene and was taken Western Maryland Regional Medical, where she was pronounced dead. Her mother and a 7-month-old infant girl escaped without injury. Firefighters brought the fire under control by about 8 a.m.
One firefighter from Cumberland City Fire Department sustained minor injuries and was treated on scene. The Red Cross is providing assistance to the families whose homes were affected by the fire.
