An 18-year-old was badly burned after firefighters said he tried saving his grandmother from a burning Butler County home on Monday.

The fire happened at a home on Oneida Valley Road in North Washington. Firefighters said the smoke from the blaze was so intense they had a hard time getting inside.

Fire investigators said the 18-year-old man called 911 to report the fire.

"She was down there sleeping and he was upstairs sleeping. He rushed downstairs to get her out," said family member Bill Bowser.

Bowser said his nephew tried everything he could to save his grandmother, but the heavy smoke prevented him from getting to her.

Firefighters said the woman was found dead in her bedroom on the first floor.

Family members said the man was staying with his grandmother to help care for her. He suffered burns to his face, arms and hands and was treated for smoke inhalation.

The teen was flown to a Pittsburgh-area hospital. There is no word on his condition.

Firefighters continue to investigate the cause of the blaze. The victims' names have not been released.
