Two children were killed in an early-morning residential fire on the city's Far South Side, authorities said.

The victims were a 3-year-old girl and a 2-year-old boy, according to Chicago Fire Department officials.

The children's mother was taken to an area hospital, and a police officer also was injured, said Fire Department spokesman Cmdr. Sean Flynn. Information on their conditions was not immediately available. It was not believed there were other injuries.

A police department spokesman could not confirm that an officer had been hurt.

Firefighters were called to a three-story building in the Concordia Place Apartments complex at 319 E. 130th St. about 3:15 a.m., according to authorities. The fire's cause was unknown.

The building was evacuated. Officials with the American Red Cross were called to the scene for assistance.
