Jan. 25, 2012

Jan. 25--Two volunteer firefighters were injured Wednesday battling a fire that engulfed a house in Islip Terrace, Suffolk County fire officials said.

No one inside the home was injured, police said.

Both firefighters were transported by Islip Exchange Ambulance to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, according to fire officials. The condition of the injured firefighters was not immediately known Wednesday, but fire officials said they both suffered burns.

Officials could not immediately say which department the two firefighters served.

The fire on Norwood Street was reported just after 3 a.m., fire officials said. Firefighters from five departments -- Islip Terrace, Islip, East Islip, Central Islip and Great River -- responded to the fire, which fully engulfed the residence.

Officials said the residents managed to escape the fire.

Police said arson squad detectives were investigating the cause of the fire Wednesday.
