A man using candles caught a storage building on fire Monday morning and flames heavily damaged 60-80 units in northwest Oklahoma City.

About 5 a.m. the man was using candles for light to see while moving items into a unit at Best Wes-Ten Storage at NW 10 and Roff Avenue, said fire Deputy Chief Marc Woodard.

"We have heavy involvement in the storage units," Woodard said.

NW 10 has reopened to traffic.

Aerial ladders from trucks were used to spray water on the roof of the building. Firefighters on the ground used axes and tools to get into separate units.

"It's going to take a while to get things fully taken care of due to the fact that people's personal belongings were in the units," Woodard said. "We'll have to pull those out unit by unit to make sure everything is extinguished."

Woodard said the man moving in said his candles were to blame for the blaze. "His story does kind of match up and coincide with where the fire is at," Woodard said.
