Feb. 01--A worker suffered burns Wednesday morning when a 55-gallon drum he was cutting with a torch exploded.

Shrewsbury Fire Chief Tony Myers said the 21-year-old man works for Southern York Turf & Tractor at 250 N. Main St. in the borough.

Fire and rescue crews were called to the business at 7:50 a.m., Myers said.

There, they found the man with burns to his head, arms and chest, Myers said. The man, whose name was not released, was taken to York Hospital, the chief said.

"He was using a cutting torch on a 55-gallon drum, and the drum exploded," Myers said. "We're suspecting (the explosion was caused by) some type of trapped vapors inside the drum."

The man was in stable condition at the scene and his injuries didn't appear to be life-threatening, according to Myers.

A state police fire marshal is investigating.
