Feb. 02--OSKALOOSA -- It's a good idea to check these vehicles regularly.
Oskaloosa Fire Capt. Dave Christenson said a 1997 Chevrolet tanker truck used by the OFD experienced clutch issues and had to be taken out of commission temporarily Tuesday. Christenson said the department obtained the vehicle in the spring of 1997.
The truck, which is primarily used to haul 3,000 gallons water to sites of rural fires, is also used for mutual aid when needed by other area fire departments, said Christenson.
All seven vehicles used by the OFD undergo daily inspection so that mechanical or other problems can be identified before a particular vehicle is called to service, Christenson noted.
"The vehicles are checked everyday, but the clutch, that was an unforeseen problem," said Christenson, adding that each OFD item has 42 items it's checked for upon inspection.
On Wednesday, Christenson said a part had been ordered for the tanker truck and he expected it to be back in service by Friday.
In the mean time, area fire departments have been notified by the 911 Center that OFD's tanker truck will be unable to respond for mutual aid.
Should the OFD be called to a rural fire in their own coverage area while their tanker is out of service, neighboring fire departments could be called to aid them, Christenson said.
"If we get one in the country, there will be an automatic dispatch for another community to help respond," explained Christenson.
