Feb. 06--AUTAUGAUVILLE -- The Autauga County Sheriff's Office is investigating an early Monday morning house fire that claimed the life of a baby.

A 1-year-old male infant died in the blaze, said Chief Deputy Joe Sedinger.

The call of the fire came in at 6 a.m., Sheriff's Office reports show.

The house in the 2500 block of Dutch Bend Street was fully involved at the time of the call.

Four people were taken to Baptist Medical Center South from injuries sustained in the blaze. Sedinger was not aware of their conditions.

The four taken to the hospital were the infant's parents and siblings, said Robbin Smith, a relative.

The parents received burns on their hands, and the other children, age 5 and 7, had smoke inhalation, Smith said.

The infant, whose name is Wes Bohannon, had apparently crawled out of his crib during the blaze and the parents could not find the child due to smoke that had filled their room, Smith said.

Several of the county's volunteer fire departments responded to the blaze, including units from Autaugaville, Booth, Independence and Jones, along with the Autauga County Rescue Squad. The Prattville Fire Department transported the injured.

The white, wood-frame structure has been deemed a total loss.

The state Fire Marshal's office will also be investigating, which is standard procedure in a fatal house fire.
