Feb. 08--STAFFORD -- The Spotsylvania County Fire and Rescue Department is looking into why there was a delay in response to a fire that killed 25 pets at a Lake Wilderness home late last month.
The homeowners were not at the house but the family's pets, including cats and dogs, were killed. A couple of animals were able to escape, but the bulk of the animals were overcome by smoke, according to fire-rescue personnel.
A call came in for help at 11:16 a.m. Ten minutes later, firefighters arrived at the call, according to a report.
There was also some confusion based on whether or not an engine was required at the fire, as opposed to an engine and a tanker, according to fire-rescue personnel.
An investigation into the fire and the delay continues.
Meanwhile, the homeowners Marye and Dennis Byrd have asked that anyone wanting to assist following the fire donate to a cause that helps sick or injured animals, in memory of their pets.
Two of their favorite charities are START in Woodbridge and Fetch a Cure in Richmond.
White Oak Animal Hospital is also helping to collect checks for these two charities.
