Feb. 09--An apartment fire left one person critically injured Thursday morning on the city's south side.

Firefighters responded just after 5:30 a.m. to the Villa Capri apartments at 1923 Fox Point Trail, off South Anthony Boulevard, and found smoke and flames coming from a second-floor unit.

Fire crews contained the blaze to one of the building's roughly two-dozen apartments, and only one person was hurt, said Stacey Fleming, a Fort Wayne Fire Department spokeswoman.

Fort Wayne Police, including a homicide detective, and the Allen County Prosecutor's Office were investigating the fire Thursday as a matter of standard procedure, not necessarily because authorities suspected foul play, Fleming said.

"Everything we did today was just standard procedure when you have a person who's been injured in a fire," she said.

The fire's cause wasn't immediately clear Thursday morning.

Fort Wayne Police Department spokeswoman Raquel Foster didn't immediately return a call seeking comment.
