Feb. 10--LUMBERTON -- A former Robeson County volunteer firefighter was charged Thursday with setting six brush fires in the Parkton area, authorities said.

Braden Karl Deschler, 20, who lives on Frontier Drive, is accused of setting the fires between Dec. 30 and Jan. 2, said Lt. Brian Duckworth of the Robeson County Sheriff's Office.

Deschler joined the Parkton Volunteer Fire Department about six months ago, Duckworth said.

He was dismissed immediately after being charged with the fires, Duckworth said.

The six fires were among a dozen or more that were reported on isolated roads near Deschler's home.

Five or six fires were reported on Murph's Road, Duckworth said, and at least three were set near the intersection of Scarboro Lane and McIver Road.

No structures were involved, Duckworth said.

Deschler actually called 911 and reported some of the fires, Duckworth said.

Deschler's bail was set at $5,000.
