Feb. 10--AMBOY -- A laundromat was destroyed and a two-story apartment was heavily damaged by fire Wednesday night, officials said Thursday.

Amboy Fire Chief Frank Stenzel said Thursday that the state fire marshal's office is trying to determine the cause of the fire at Amboy Laundromat, 106 S. Jones Ave., a 24-hour, self-serve laundry facility.

At this point, officials don't know if foul play was involved, Stenzel said. A call to the Amboy Police Department was not returned Thursday.

Firefighters were called about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday to the laundromat, which was engulfed in flames.

It took firefighters about 30 to 45 minutes to put out the flames. Firefighters stayed on scene for about 3 hours to make sure the building was secure, Stenzel said.

No one was in the building at the time of the fire.

The fire also heavily damaged the apartment and a storage building that were attached to the laundromat.

The Lee County branch of the American Red Cross provided lodging, food, clothing, and a storage bin to help two adults who were living in the apartment.
