A tanker with a 19-year-old firefighter at the wheel rolled over on its way to what turned out to be a false alarm injuring two Mountain View Volunteer Fire Department members, according to a news account in the Winston Salem Journal.
The N.C. Highway Patrol reported the wreck happend at about 7 p.m. on Friday on Zephyr-Mountain Park Road near state Road, the newspaper reported. The truck was carrying about 1,000 gallons of water when it went out of control on a curve. Instead, the truck skidded and roll on its right side hit a guardrail and spinning.
The paper reported the truck left the road to the right near a bridge over a creek and the driver turned sharply to the left trying to get the truck back on the road and under control.
Both men in the tanker suffered injuries and were taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. According to the news report, Matthew Hurley II, 19, of Dobson suffered minor injuries and Matthew Wood, 44, of State Road, suffered arm injuries.
Witnesses told the newspaper the truck appeared to be rocking sideways before the wreck likely caused by water shifting in the tank making it challenging to control the apparatus.
Police say speed was not a factor in the wreck which caused significant damage to the vehicle.
The original call, which turned out to be a false alarm was handled by another department, the paper reported.
