Feb. 12--A forest fire in Superior's south end was about 75 percent under control as of this afternoon, according to Superior Fire Battalion Chief Scott Gordon.
Firefighters responded to a report of a grassfire at about 2:15 p.m.
"With no snow cover and a strong west wind, it was able to really move," Gordon said.
As the grassfire approached stands of popple in the area, Superior called in additional support from Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources staff at Pattison State Park and the township of Superior's volunteer fire department.
The west wind was pushing the fire east, and Gordon said efforts focused on keeping the flames from crossing the Nemadji River and advancing further into Superior. He said that objective appears to have been achieved, although firefighters remain on the scene.
No cause of the fire has yet been determined.
The size of the fire-damaged area also has yet to be determined, but Gordon estimated the blaze swept across at least five acres.
