MIAMI (WSVN) -- A Miami firefighter is recovering in the hospital after falling from the second floor of a South Florida pharmacy.
The incident occurred at about 12:36 a.m. Tuesday at the Navarro Pharmacy along Southwest Eighth Street and 12th Avenue in Little Havana. Crews arrived on scene to find smoke billowing from one of the doors.
Crews entered the empty building and noticed smoke coming from the back of the store. Within an hour, more than 40 firefighters gained control of the fire.
As crews checked for hot spots on the second floor of the building, a fire captain fell about 20 feet and injured his leg.
"A Mayday came across the radio. That Mayday was due to the fact that a Miami Fire Rescue Captain had fallen through the second floor, down to the cement below," said Miami Fire Rescue Assistant Fire Chief Joseph Zahralban. "He apparently stepped on some AC duct work and fell through."
Rescue crews transported the injured firefighter to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.
According to crews on scene, the captain was said to have pain in his legs and experiencing numbness. "He was transported to our trauma center, where they are now doing a number of tests to determine if in fact he does have any fractures or injuries of serious nature," said Zahralban.
