Two families had to be rescued from their second-floor balconies early this morning after a fire started in a storage space of a North Kansas City apartment.

Firefighters also found a woman unconscious in the building's hallway. She was taken to the hospital for treatment of her injuries, said Greg Hansen, a spokesman for North Kansas City. The woman's condition was not available.

The fire was reported about 3:40 a.m. in the apartment building at 1611Orleans Circle, which is near Armour Road and Interstates 29/35.

Firefighters rescued the families from the balconies using ground ladders.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, Hansen said.
