About two dozen residents were forced to evacuate their Hill District apartments on Tuesday after a man who had been fighting with his girlfriend set fire to mattresses in her bedroom, Pittsburgh police Sgt. William Gorman said.
The sprinkler system inside the building in the 1900 block of Centre Avenue kept the fire from spreading beyond the room, and the man was taken to UPMC Mercy, Uptown, for treatment of smoke inhalation, Gorman said. City arson investigators are expected to file charges against him, Gorman said.
The fire was reported at 7:53 p.m. Most residents were permitted to return to their apartments after firefighters decided it was safe for them to do so, Gorman said.
