RICHMOND, Ky. -- A driver struck a firefighter Tuesday who was trying to direct him around a vehicle fire, according to Richmond police.

A portion of the Eastern Bypass between Killarney Lane and Interstate 75 was blocked off at 8:45 p.m. so firefighters could extinguish a vehicle that was on fire, according to Richmond Police Chief Larry Brock.

Solomonworth McQuire, 61, reportedly turned from South Killarney Lane onto the bypass and headed toward the blocked off area. A Richmond firefighter tried to flag him down and shouted for him to stop, according to Brock.

McQuire did not stop and drove into the firefighter, causing a minor injury to his right arm. He was treated and released from Pattie A. Clay Regional Medical Center, Brock said in a news release.

McQuire was taken to the Madison County Detention Center and was released the same day.
