One man was killed and two teens were hospitalized after being shot Sunday afternoon in a drive-by shooting in the West Pullman neighborhood on the far South Side, police said.
But officials said seven others, including four children, were injured in a traffic crash that occurred as paramedics were being dispatched to the shooting, said Chicago Fire Department Chief Joseph Roccasalva.
Police were called to the 11600 block of South Ada Street shortly after 3:30 p.m., police said.
Police said a 20-year-old man was walking eastbound on 116th Street with a 17-year-old and 16-year-old boy when a white or tan vehicle drove up and someone from inside fired at them, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien.
The man, later identified as Anthony Harrell, of the 12500 block of South Ashland Avenue, was shot in the back and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he later died, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
The 17-year-old boy was shot in the abdomen and foot and was taken in serious condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center. The 16-year-old was shot in the stomach and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital also in serious condition, police said.
After the shooting occurred, two of the victims managed to make it inside a home on South Ada while the third victim was found outside, O'Brien said.
No one was in custody but detectives were investigating the incident as a homicide, O'Brien said.
While responding to the shooting scene, a responding fire department vehicle was struck by an SUV that disobeyed the red light signal at 115th Street and Wentworth Avenue, Roccasalva said.
A Chicago Fire Department field chief, two adults and four children were taken to Metro South Medical Center in Blue Island and Roseland Community Hospital, all in fair-to-serious condition, said Roccasalva.
