Feb. 27--BYRON -- An engine of a Norfolk Southern train caught fire Sunday afternoon in Byron, the fire chief says.

Byron fire Chief J.D. Mosby said the train's crew had the fire almost out when city firefighters arrived within four minutes of the 4:37 p.m. call at Main Street and Heritage Boulevard. The train had stopped just short of the intersection.

The fire was caused by a leak in one of three engines, Mosby said. The train's crew was able to shut off the fuel, which caused the fire to go out, he said

Each engine holds about 6,000 gallons of diesel fuel used to drive the generator that provides electricity to run the train, Mosby said.

Norfolk Southern personnel inspected the train, which was able to get back under way at 5:30 p.m., Mosby said.

Most of the fuel appeared to have been consumed by the fire, Mosby said. Norfolk Southern is expected to send a crew to assess whether there was any type of environmental impact, he said.

No one was injured, he said.
