Feb. 29--LAKE SAINT LOUIS -- A fire destroyed or heavily damaged 16 units and damaged eight others Wednesday afternoon in the Camden Cedar Lakes apartment building.

Authorities said everyone inside the two-story structure is believed to have gotten out safely. The 24-unit building is in the 100 block of Cedar Cove Trail near Highway A.

Cassidee Wakefield, 12, said she was outside petting her dog when she noticed flames coming from wood piled against the side of one end of the building.

She said she tried to put out the fire with two cups of water from her kitchen but that the flames were too high at that point.

Authorities said they believe that the fire carried to the upper deck. A responding police officer saw flames on the upper deck blowing into the building. High winds helped fuel the blaze.
