March 01--ADA -- Thanks to firefighters and an alert neighbor, a house in Ada was spared from certain disaster Wednesday.

The fire occurred at a residence on 14th Place shortly after 2 p.m. A neighbor saw flames on the roof about two-feet high and called 911. While on the phone with emergency dispatchers, the woman knocked on the door of the residence and alerted two people inside. The residents inside, Elden and Dorothy Weesner, were not aware of the flames on the roof and quickly exited the home.

Firefighters arrived and climbed up a ladder to the roof.

"A motor on the electric attic vent apparently either locked up or overheated for some reason and caused and electrical fire," Ada Assistant Fire Chief Rickey Ross said. "We were able to shut the power off to it at the breaker panel and remove (the motor and vent) from the attic."

Ross said the flames were spreading when firefighters arrived.

"The guys were able to get it under control with just a couple of gallons of water and a little effort," Ross said. "Thanks to (the neighbor) we got here plenty quick and avert a bigger problem," Ross said.

Ada firefighters Joe Allen and Danny Manuel later rescued two pet dogs which ran from the scene when firefighters opened the gate to the backyard of the residence.
